UK Employers Urged to Support Lower-Income Working Parents for a More Diverse Workforce

A recent study by Working Families, in partnership with Pinsent Masons, reveals that lower-income working parents in the UK face challenges due to the high cost of childcare.

The research indicates that these parents are more likely to reduce their working hours, quit their jobs, or go into debt to manage childcare needs.

Women and Black parents are particularly affected.

Kate Dodd, an expert in equality law, emphasises the need for employers to support lower-income working parents, as it benefits both the workforce and the bottom line.

Employers can provide flexibility in working hours, offer financial incentives like salary sacrifice schemes and enhanced parental leave, and consider the quality and volume of work rather than the specific timing.

The research also highlights the importance of affordable and accessible childcare, inclusive leave policies, and job security for parents on lower incomes.
